Lesser Black-backed Gull is similar to Caspian Gull in coloring but mantle and scapulars are black or slate-black; legs are always yellow. Juveniles are same to juvenile Caspian Gulls but much darker: grey-brownish color is replaced by almost black. In size Lesser Black-headed Gull is slightly less than Caspian Gull: wing 395-450, tarsus 55-65, bill 45-55 mm.
Lesser Black-backed Gull was collected on Caspian Sea near delta of Volga and on eastern shore of Caspian Sea near Kara-Bogaz-Gol gulf at 9 April 1935; Pokras lake in north-west from Kustanai; and three birds were shot 21 June 1894 on Chagly lake, between Petropavlovsk and Kokchetav. On Syrdarya valley it obtained 17 May 1925.
Lesser Black-backed Gull in Kazakhstan is rare vagrant. Occurs from April to end of June.
